Broughton High School and I welcome Education Secretary to discuss vocational GCSEs as major shake-up announced by government

A pioneering school in Ribble Valley constituency was in the spotlight as the government announced the introduction of new vocational GCSEs.
I was proud to welcome the Rt Hon Lucy Powell MP, Secretary of State for Education, to Broughton High School following her announcement about a major shake-up of the education system.

The vocational GCSEs, which could be in schools by September 2029, could include subjects like child development, building and construction, digital tech and business management.

Broughton, which has about 900 pupils on roll, is doing brilliant things with a broad curriculum.

Lucy and I toured the classrooms, where pupils spoke about how they’re combining traditional subjects with qualifications in areas like construction, music production and equine studies.

One year 10 student shared how she spends half a day a week at Myerscough College studying horticulture and landscaping, and others are learning trades with Preston Vocational Centre.

It was lovely to hear how this varied timetable is providing every child with the best route for them, which is the aim of the new vocational GCSEs.

Pupils spoke confidently and were enthusiastic about this lovely school, which is rightly getting the recognition it deserves. Lucy and I grabbed a picture with head girl and head boy, Charlotte Lowe and Oscar Bolton, and headteacher David Botes before we left.

Thanks to you all for such a warm welcome
