I’m really impressed when young people want to make a difference to their communities.
Freddie Burnett-Cherry, the Member of Youth Parliament for Preston and South Ribble, is a great example of that. I met with him to talk about the work he’s doing in his role and explore how me and my office can support him.
A qualified lifeguard, he’s been working closely with the Royal Life Saving Society and is planning to lead assemblies at local schools next year on drowning prevention.
He’s worked with Lancashire Constabulary and the Violence Prevention Network and is currently compiling surveys on antisocial behaviour and violence against women and girls.
These will be circulated around schools and the results used to inform the work of the police.
UK Parliament Week
Freddie’s also keen to work with other MYPs to improve engagement between areas, and there’s potential for him to get involved with my team during UK Parliament Week later this year.
It was a really productive meeting and I look forward to seeing the impact of Freddie’s work.
