Midwives carry out critical work against a backdrop of centuries of under-investment in women’s health.
I joined midwives campaigning in Parliament Square for better opportunities and funding for student midwives and those who are newly qualified.
Organised by Fund Future Midwives UK, including Sheena Byrom, one of my neighbouring constituents, the campaign is calling for urgent action to:
- Guarantee job opportunities so trained staff can enter the workforce.
- Remove tuition fees for midwifery degrees in England.
- Introduce a fair, sustainable bursary that reflects the demands of clinical training.
I’m so supportive of the work midwives do and I know they enter the profession because they want to care for people. I pledged to do anything I could to support their campaign and urged them to keep up the noise to ensure their voices are heard.
